Lakeridge Health (LH) marked World Kidney Day by welcoming 46 new kidney dialysis machines to its fleet, including 18 machines specifically for home use. On March 12th, the new equipment was unveiled – funded with $1.2 million from the Lakeridge Health Foundation’s (LHF) kidney dialysis campaign. Kidney failure was often fatal until about 50 years ago, when the first dialysis treatment was performed in Canada. Today, LH’s dialysis program delivers about 40,000 in-hospital treatments a year and is the third-largest home dialysis provider in Ontario. The LHF dialysis campaign has funded 59 new dialysis machines to date and continues to work to fulfill its commitment to fund a total of 87 new machines. The new machines will replace the existing fleet, which are reaching their end-of-life.
